Gulf of Mirabello Holidays

"The clue's in the name here - 'Mirabello' means 'beautiful view' and you'll find oodles of them along this delightful stretch of coastline."

As you come out of Neapolis, the winding road climbs to a crest by a line of windmills. Here, get set for a sharp intake of breath. In front of you is one of the most glorious views you'll see anywhere in the world, let alone on the island of Crete. The glorious Gulf of Mirabello takes its name from a former Genoese fortress, demolished by the Turks. But they could never destroy the beauty of this lovely stretch of coast, which has heaps of attractions for holidaymakers, including gorgeous beaches, charming little villages, not to mention some fascinating heritage sites. The region's main port and resort is Aghios Nikolaos, built around a 'bottomless' lake and with a harbour area that bustles with bars, restaurants and nightlife. Drive north towards the lively resort of Elounda and you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views across the azure blue waters of the Gulf. As for Elounda itself, it's a fun resort with plenty of life, particularly around the stylish harbour, usually packed with colourful fishing boats. Nearby is the village of Plaka, where you can take a boat trip to take a look at the ruined fortifications on the little island of Spinalonga. South of 'Ag Nik' are the lace-making town of Kritsa, the important Minoan town of Gournia and the charming village of Pahia Ammos, where you simply must sample the mouth-watering fresh fish from one of the renowned seafront tavernas. With all this and more, whether you're a sunbather, a sightseer or both, the Gulf of Mirabello has all the makings of a great holiday.

When you're thinking of holidays in the Gulf of Mirabello, the name says it all. Mirabello means 'beautiful view' … and this priceless attraction comes as standard with every turn in the road. Filling a corner on Crete's northeast coast, the bay encapsulates the island's character. Rising from the sea, rocky hillsides make great hiking grounds where the scent of wild herbs is carried on the breeze. Old world villages cling to the slopes, some - like Kalo Chorio - with their toes in the water … Others are hidden higher up, gems such as Kritsa - known for its fine lace and frescoed Byzantine church.

Gulf of Mirabello holidays focus on two main resorts … Aghios Nikolaos, with its busy little harbour and bottomless lake. And Elounda, where gin palace yachts share the moorings with local 'caique' fishing boats. The coast of the bay is a motley mix of shingle ribbons, pebble shores and sweeps of golden sand. And the choice of hotels and apartments is equally varied. There's everything from pure indulgence to cheerfully cheap holidays in the Gulf of Mirabello, and often great late deals for last minute holidays.

So look at some less obvious places. Here's a couple to get you started …For families seeking peace, privacy and a private pool, the Villas Maria-Emmanuella and Sophie - on a wooded hill behind Kalo Chorio …For an intimate choice beloved by couples, the Istron Bay Hotel - in a breathtaking setting, an easy drive from Ag. Nik. You'll be tempted…
