Maheri Holidays
The tiny hamlet of Maheri nestles on the side of a rocky crag in the foothills of the White Mountains.
Maheri enjoys spectacular views looking across rolling unspoilt countryside to the sight of the sea in the distance. It is a ten-minute drive inland from Kalives on the north coast, and 2 km from its nearest village at Neo Chorio.
The Cretans here are fiercely proud of their quiet, traditional village that has been declared a conservation area mainly due to the efforts of the local mayor and others in restoring several old stone houses using natural materials. Encouragement is given for the restoration of all old buildings, including an old olive mill, and any new development is strictly prohibited.
On the west side of the village the little white chapel of St John has been built in a crack inside an enormous perpendicular rock, and on the east side of the village square is a small stone theatre that holds seating for five hundred people - perhaps they are expecting their village to be less quiet in the future.
If you want to be sure of a spot where, even in the height of summer, there's no invasion of tourism - pick a place that's close to (but not on) the water. If you also want to experience the essence of Crete, choose a conservation village - where old-world houses are lovingly restored …and new development is simply not an option. And if cobbles, courtyards and quaint narrow streets are your kind of strolling grounds - with holidays in Maheri you've met your perfect match.
Climbing a craggy hillside just inland of Crete's north coast, this hideaway hamlet is an escapist heaven. Calling Maheri holidays quiet is something of an understatement. There's a charming little village square, an old olive press, a tiny white chapel built into the rocks, and a single kafenion … for sundowners and home-cooked snacks. That's about it … except for fabulous views up to the White Mountains and down to the blue Cretan Sea. A 1km walk brings you to tavernas in neighbouring Neo Chorio. There's a choice of beaches within 20 minutes' drive. And Chania's history, harbour and bustling atmosphere is within easy reach for a complete change of tempo.
Self-catering holidays in Maheri Village Houses give you all the character of those carefully renovated buildings - along with stylish simplicity and undisturbed calm. Last minute holidays in Maheri are escape routes to tranquillity. Couples and older families would love it. Party people need not apply...
